A Friendsgiving Mahjong Night: Supper, Friends and One More Hand
Share the hosting, enjoy a manageable supper, and make room for mahjong. Plan a Friendsgiving gathering for four or eight with warm inspiration from The Earth House.

A favorite pie on the counter, a few dishes brought from different kitchens, and an evening that continues after supper. Friendsgiving lends itself to mahjong when everyone knows what they are contributing and there is room to enjoy both parts of the gathering.
For this version, take your inspiration from The Earth House. Its olive greens, terracotta tones and golden yellows bring warmth to the game table. Build around one design, share the work, and save some energy for the first hand.
Share the invitation, and the work
Start with the people and the space: four players need one complete game setup; eight need two. Tell guests which version of mahjong you will play, whether the evening includes teaching, and when you expect to finish. Choose a date your group can comfortably keep, even if it falls well before Thanksgiving.
Give each willing helper one clear contribution. Someone brings a side dish ready to serve, someone handles dessert, and someone takes responsibility for the game equipment. Ask about dietary needs before agreeing on the menu.
Be specific about practical details, too. Does a dish need oven space? Is there a serving spoon in the bag? Who will help clear supper? Settling those questions ahead makes it easier for the host to sit down with everyone else.
Choose a warm starting point
Leafy and relaxed: OLIVE & EARTH. Cream and terracotta leaves frame an olive-green center, with dark stems and scattered oval accents around the edges. Repeat the cream in dinner napkins and use a terracotta serving bowl. The printed branches provide plenty of detail once the mat comes out.
Soft and earthy: CLAY SOCIAL. A terracotta field meets pale vessel shapes, cream arches and crescents, and small brown accents. Pair it with simple pottery and a linen-colored runner on the sideboard. This look works especially well when everyone's serving dishes are a little different.
Warm and cheerful: GOLDEN HOUR. Cream fan-shaped flowers surround a golden-ochre center, with small brown flower centers. Try ivory plates and amber glassware at supper, then let the mat carry that warmth into the game.
Choose whichever works with the pieces you already enjoy using. A favorite bowl or a set of everyday glasses can be the connection between supper and play.
Make supper easy to contribute to
Plan one main dish, two simple sides and dessert. A roast turkey breast or a mushroom-and-lentil bake can anchor the meal. Add a cabbage-and-apple salad, good bread and cranberry sauce, then finish with pumpkin pie or a favorite bakery dessert.
Choose a main recipe with preparation you can do ahead, and ask guests to bring sides that need little attention on arrival. Agree on portions once the guest count is settled. One well-planned meal is plenty for the evening.
For an alcohol-free drink, mix cranberry juice with sparkling water and a squeeze of orange just before serving. Keep plain water available, with tea or decaf coffee for dessert. Give drinks their own surface once the game starts.
Give the dining table a second act
If supper and mahjong share a table, keep the mat stored until the dishes have been cleared. Have one person gather plates, another put food away, and another prepare the drinks area. Wipe away crumbs and let the tabletop dry before unrolling the mat.
Test the game layout before guests arrive. Our Standard mats measure approximately 31.5 × 31.5 inches. Allow space for your actual tiles, racks and any required reference cards, with the mat's edges fully supported.
The 20.9 × 20.9-inch Travel size offers less playing room and may not accommodate a complete setup entirely on the mat. Check the Mat Guide, and try sitting in every chair. Keep centerpieces on the sideboard, check that tile faces are readable, and leave a clear path to the refreshments.
Make room for four or eight players
For four, keep the evening simple: supper together, a shared reset, then play at a pace everyone has agreed to. Bring dessert out during a break after a completed hand.
For eight, assign one person to check each table's equipment in advance. Each needs its own suitable tile set, seating, and the racks, dice and reference materials required for the version being played. Check the second table as carefully as the first.
Let the two tables play independently. Agree on a dessert window so each can finish its current hand before gathering again. You can enjoy one Friendsgiving evening together without synchronizing every round or introducing a tournament format.
Make the welcome clear for beginners
If a friend is learning, arrange a teaching table with someone who wants to explain the game. Let everyone seated there know to expect questions and a slower pace. At an eight-person gathering, a teaching table and a regular table can work if the experience levels and guest preferences suit that arrangement.
Share what to expect at a first mahjong night beforehand. An experienced player should not have to teach, manage supper and host the other table at once. Give that person room to concentrate on the welcome they have offered.
A small thank-you, before the tiles come out
Put a short personal note beside each dinner napkin. Thank a friend for something specific: making you laugh, checking in, or always being willing to try a new plan. Keep it simple enough to write by hand.
Leave the notes with guests when you clear the table. It is a small Friendsgiving gesture that belongs to the people around it, and something they can take home after the last hand.
