The prettiest mat is the one that works for your table. Before choosing a pattern, give a little thought to your playing space, your racks and the way your group likes to sit.
Mahj Mat Studio offers two square sizes: Standard at 31.5 × 31.5 inches and Travel at 20.9 × 20.9 inches. They have different footprints, so it is worth checking more than the name.
Standard: room for your regular game
For a regular four-player setup, start by considering Standard. At approximately 80 × 80 cm, it offers substantially more playing surface than Travel. It is the natural starting point if you want the walls, discards and racks arranged around a generous central area.
That does not mean it fits every table or tile set. Larger racks and tiles need more room. Lay out your own equipment before ordering, especially if you prefer all four racks to sit on the mat.
Travel: a smaller footprint, with a trade-off
Travel measures approximately 53 × 53 cm. Its compact size can be useful when packing for a trip or using a smaller surface. But it does not create more room on a small table, and it should not be treated as a direct replacement for a full-size four-player playing area.
With full-size tiles, your racks may need to sit on the tabletop outside the mat. Check that the walls and discards still fit comfortably. A compact tile set may suit your arrangement better, but test the complete setup rather than assuming compatibility.
Try this five-minute tabletop test
- Measure the usable width and depth of your table.
- Cut or arrange paper into a square matching your chosen mat size. Keep it flat, with no overhanging corners.
- Set out your actual tiles and racks as you would for a game.
- Check that everyone can reach the middle, with space for hands and reference cards.
- Move drinks to coasters or a nearby side table.
A note about round tables
A square mat needs enough room for its diagonal, not just its side length. A 31.5-inch square has a diagonal of approximately 44.5 inches; a 20.9-inch square is approximately 29.6 inches diagonally. Those are geometric minimums for fitting the whole square on a circular surface, not recommendations for a comfortable complete game setup. Allow additional room as your equipment requires.
Choose the fit, then the pattern
Both sizes have a smooth polyester surface, non-slip rubber backing and 3 mm construction. A black storage bag is included. Tiles and racks are not included.
